Once the travel bug bites…

Michael Palin once said “Once the travel bug bites there is no known antidote, and I know that I shall be happily infected until the end of my life”

Palin has long been a source of joy for me, through his comedic exploits with the Python crew, Ripping Yarns and more. Then there are his forays into the travel world, where both his TV series and accompanying books have been both inspirational and enviable.

On November 9 2012, the Wheeler Centre in Melbourne (a cultural institution dedicated to the discussion and practice of writing, books and ideas) had Palin as their special guest to discuss the recent release of his latest travel offering, ‘Brazil’.

It proved more than just a discussion of his latest book, delving deeper into his comedic and travel past, and opening up the floor for some listener Q & A.

Rubbing shoulders with the great Michael Palin

Rubbing shoulders with the great Michael Palin

Delivered with his usual humility and charm, it was an incredible night and one for which I’m very thankful to Sarah (as she surprised me with the tickets for the night).

I’ll finish with one last Palin quote which rings very true to my own heart.

“Contrary to what the politicians and religious leaders would like us to believe, the world won’t be made safer by creating barriers between people.”

Let's hope his words continue to ring true
